According to CBS:

…officials at Weber Middle School in Port Washington [NY] are worried that students are getting hurt during recess. Thus, they have instituted a ban on footballs, baseballs, lacrosse balls, or anything that might hurt someone on school grounds.

From now on, only nerf balls and other “soft” balls will be permitted.

This is middle school. These kids are between 12 and 16 years old. Now, they can’t play ball.

Port Washington schools Supt. Kathleen Maloney said the change in policy is warranted due to a rash of playground injuries.

“Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious, so we want to make sure our children have fun, but are also protected,” Maloney said.

It seems to me that what they most need protecting from is addle-pated ninnies like Ms. Maloney. May she trip over a foam bat and bark her shinny-shin-shin.
